Have you read the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series? It's by Rick Riordan and very well done. In a way sort of like a Harry Potter done with Greek myths, but not so similar that it looks like it was copied.
What kind of books are you looking for? Complex classic stuff, or something lighter? Some books I've enjoyed within the past year are "Hexwood" by Diana Wynne Jones and the Bartimaeus Trilogy, by Jonathan Stroud (both are fantasies, BTW). Diana Wynne Jones is an awesome author, for both kids books and her more "YA" stuff. Hexwood is more on the YA/A side, and it really challenges you to figure out what's happening, and when it happened (so to speak). The Bartimaeus books are witty, have an interesting plot, good characters, unique "magic system", among other things.
Hmmmm.... I haven't had time to do a lot of reading lately but books I've enjoyed include:
"Letters from the corrugated castle" (I'm not sure who this is by...it is about the gold rush in California)
"Lost in translation"- a HILARIOUS book about signs from other countries that were translated into English (my personal favorite from Tokyo, Japan- "Good appearance. Please no watermelon please"). Although this is definitely not a "scholarly" book, it is hilarious.
"Children of war"- a book about the war between America and Iraq written from the children in Iraq's point of view. Not a long book, but a very good read.
"Chasing Vermeer" and "The Wright 3" Again, not very long, but VERY worthwhile. Oh, and it's fiction.
"Albert Einstein" (the Great Course). This one isn't a book...but you should watch or listen to it anyways.
"How Doctors think" -by Jerome Groopman. This follows the same lines as Malcolm Gladwell, except in the medical field. Why doctors misdiagnose, how stereotypes affect diagnosis etc.
"The Mozart season"- by Virginia Euwer Wolff. This is a fictional book about music that I really loved (and she plays a violin :0))
"Do hard things" -by Alex and Brett Harris. An inspirational book written by homeschooled teens.

I have read the Bartimaeus Trilogy though, and I agree that it is fantastic!
